About the ExhibitionRichard Kimathi needs very little introduction at home. Being one of the five artists chosen to represent Kenya for the first time at the Venice Biennale, cements his place as one of the region's leading practitioners. Venice is not Kimathi's first brush with Stardom: In 2000, he received a letter from the New York selection committee appointed to choose work for a limited edition stamp for the United Nations: 'You, along with Vermeer and Matisse, have been chosen...'. There was never any doubt that Kimathi was destined for great things.
It is no surprise then, that known to be an artist's artist, he continues to experiment in this latest series of work. 'On the outside looking in' emphasises his extraordinary ability to reduce shape and colour to the minimum whilst retaining a remarkably complex depiction of emotion and mood. Frank Whalley has said of previous works that his technique 'reinforces and projects his vision of an anxious world', indeed 'the works burn slowly with quiet intelligence, seduce the eye and convince both mind and heart'. The latest series is no exception. Kimathi has been the recipient of the Ruth Hunt Wood Residency at the University of Kentucky and has exhibited widely at home, in Europe, Africa and the United States. Most recently, in March 2017 his work was exhibited by the Heong Gallery, Downing College, Cambridge as part of Robert Devereux's Sina Jina Collection. More on Richard Kimathi
