Richard Kimathi Exhibition
About Richard Kimathi and the exhibition
Richard Kimathi's work is never less than extraordinary.
Surely one of the highlights of the year, seemingly every artist in Kenya awaits Richard Kimathi's latest series with much excitement and anticipation. Without doubt it will surprise, be totally new and fresh. It will have no relationship to anything you have ever seen. The latest show; 'The common people' does not disappoint. In this series Kimathi explores the trauma of human migration. With 'Vocals I and II' he first focuses on the souls lost on the journey at sea. He then carries his theme further with the powerful 'Ghost of the sea'. And like many artists, this leads him to a new subject; the havoc wrought by the political class on the people of Kenya. 'National dress' portrays the extreme discomfort of the wearers, whist the feral appearance of the 'Political guru' and the pained expression on the faces in 'Small wounds' need no further explanation. As ever Kimathi succeeds in evoking strong reactions from the viewer, always emotion first and cerebral wonder soon after. The technical perfection of the paint application is undisputed.
