About the exhibition

Red or Carmine, in its purest form is really made of Cochineal beetles’ blood:

‘For centuries it was the treasure of the Incas and the Aztecs and for centuries after that it was the treasure of Spaniards, who guarded their secret crop jealously.  It has been used on the robes of kings and cardinals, on the lips of screen goddesses, on the camel bags of nomads and on the canvases of great artists.  And if it disappeared the next day many of its users didn’t care, because on the day it is fresh, carmine – or cochineal or crimson; it has many names – is one of the reddest dyes that the natural world has produced’.  In our modern world it is now the food colour additive E120.
Excerpt from ‘Colour’ by Victoria Finlay

Born of a need for bright colour amidst the overcast atmosphere generated by the Covid-19 pandemic, the root of RED, the exhibition, was an open call to all artists to produce works with a predominance of Crimson in them.  We received a significant response and the result is a very diverse exhibition which we hope you will find stimulating.

Included are some of the well-known artists; Lisa Milroy, Prina Shah, Sophie Walbeoffe, Thom Ogonga, Patrick Kinuthia, Kyalo Justus, Elias Mung’ora, Anthony Okello, Maggie Otieno, James Mbuthia, Ehoodi Kichapi, Florence Wangui, Anna Rarity, Simon Muriithi, Charles Ngatia, Dinesh Ravankar, Dennis Muraguri, Olivia Pendergast, Xavier Verhoest and Hussein Halfawi.  And then some younger artists; Nelson Ijakaa,  Sebawali Sio, Abby Brooke, Wallace Juma, Andrew Crae, James Dundi, April Kamunde, Adam Masava, Musah  Mwakelemu, Nicy Aluoch, Andrew Ngoya and many others.
