Lisa Milroy
Lisa Milroy was born in Vancouver, Canada and lives and works in London, UK. Milroy has worked at the Slade School of Fine Art, UCL since 2009 and as Guest Advisor at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten, Amsterdam since 1994. Milroy won First Prize in the John Moores Painting Prize in 1989 and was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2005. She was Artist Trustee of Tate from 2013-2017 and Liaison Trustee to the National Gallery 2015-2017. In 2015 Milroy initiated Hands On Art Workshops with the support of Vodafone Foundation and UNHCR, delivering a programme of practical art workshops through video conference for school children in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya. In 2018, Parasol unit presented Here & There: Paintings by Lisa Milroy. This solo exhibition brought together a selection of work from the previous fifteen years to explore Milroy’s approach to still life through the lens of stillness and movement, presence and absence, making, looking, touch and transformation – recurrent critical perspectives in her practice. Milroy paintings are held in many public collections, including Tate, UK, Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan, Frac Occitanie Montpellier, France, Metropolitan Museum of Art, USA and East African Visual Arts Trust, Kenya.
Still life is at the heart of Milroy’s practice. In the 1980s her paintings featured ordinary objects depicted against an off-white background compositionally arranged in a grid or random scatter. In the 1990s her imagery expanded to include depictions of objects within settings, as well as landscape, architecture, people and storytelling. As her approaches to still life diversified, so did her manner of painting, giving rise to a range of stylistic innovations. In recent years Milroy’s focus has been on installation-based paintings that often feature a performative component. Throughout her practice, Milroy has been fascinated by the relation between stillness and movement, and the nature of making and looking at painting. |
