Florence Wangui (b. 1986)
Growing up, she immersed herself in drawing as her 'quiet fun space'. And even the walls and tables provided an excellent choice of 'canvas' for her activities. So accurate were her renderings that her drawings of biological subjects on chalkboard were often used by her Biology teacher to teach in secondary school.
After completing her bachelor degree studies, she pursued her 'first love' as a profession and started out under the tutelage of artist, Patrick Mukabi. More recently she has worked under Scottish glass painter and artist, John Clark. Together they have created works of fused glass, notably for the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Kericho. She also worked on 'Stations of the cross’ and bronze door panels for the same building. Just lately, Florence has been mentored by Argentinian artist, Dolores Gomez, in oil painting. She loves to draw, drawing she finds is the 'rawest form of communicating’ through art. Wangui also works with other different media including oil paint, fused glass sculpture and clay sculpture, amongst others. She also teaches drawing and painting to youth at primary schools and in Nairobi prisons, alongside fellow artists in her community art group. For inspiration Wangui draws on her own life experiences and shares her perceptions through her art, particularly the beauty of the cycles of life, what people draw from them and how it shapes their lives |
Anthony Wanjohi (b. 1986)While not a formally trained artist, Anthony gained his artistic skill through interactions with other artists in Nairobi.
His work makes use of a wide range of media and he has recently taken to screen printing with an eye focused upon the ubiquitous street vendor. PressEastAfrican - 11-08-2018 - Drawing the line at a naked truth
