James Mbuthia Exhibition 2015
One Off is pleased to present An exhibition of works by James Mbuthia 'Every painting is a poem'
Private View: Sunday 26 April 2015 Exhibition Run: 26 April to 27 May 2015 As a well established Kenyan artist and having exhibited both locally and internationally, James Mbuthia needs little introduction. Often called the 'Chagall of Kenya', Mbuthia's latest works are true to type.
This collection of acrylic on canvas paintings leads on from his last series which was based on the protagonists contesting the March 2013 Kenyan elections. He says that the subsequent 'chaos, bomb blasts and terrorism' following on from that election left him in a state of extreme anxiety and led him to seek out a peaceful environment from which to connect with nature and his rural surroundings. He started to visit the Rift Valley with increasing frequency and established his base on a rock, which he returns to repeatedly. From here he was able to view the surroundings with a pair of binoculars and to translate the images he captured to his canvases back home. Mbuthia has produced a charming series of paintings and followers of this artist will find a subtle change to his palette inspired by these regular trips to the Rift Valley. In many of the works he has successfully captured the sharp, clear blues and yellows of that region whilst retaining the element of fantasy which make his paintings so captivating. |
