About the Exhibition
Carbon (Mwini) Mutuku
In this body of works, Mwini (Kenya, 1986) is researching ancient Egyptian symbols and their current-day meanings within the Kenyan and African setting. To what extent does this historic language influence modern society?
He uses laser-beams to amend the used materials, and adds therewith a contemporary dimension to these signs.
Eltayeb (Kosti, Sudan, 1968) explores the depiction of the people he has met in his life, by using reclaimed materials.
By peeling and scraping off layers of paint, he tries to unravel the history of his subjects and reveal a glimpse of past life. By adding some paint and converting the original fabric, at the same time, he adds a contemporary element again.
