'Fishy Business' Anthony Okello Exhibition Invitation

About the exhibition

Born in Kenya in 1976, Anthony Okello is considered to be one of the most important Kenyan artists of his generation.

Originally trained by Buru Buru Institute of Fine Art, Okello went on to work from the Kuona Trust space for a number of years.

Much of Okello’s work falls into the genre of allegorical exploration of local mythology or bestial portrayals of the excesses of the corrupt elite; always remarkably benign in the light of the devastation they wreak on the ordinary man or creature.

Widely exhibited in the UK, Okello features in the collections of the late Robert Loder and Robert Devereux whose Sina Jina collection, including Okello’s X from Masquerade series 2013 was exhibited at The Hoeng Gallery, Downing College, Cambridge in 2017.  He has also shown work in France, Uganda, India and The Netherlands.

The Masquerade series deserves special mention as it has been a recurring riff in Okello’s repertoire for a number of years.  An exploration of identity and the human tendency to hide behind artifice, this show comprises two new works from this series
